I am using a segway i167 as a mobility aid and I'm planning to visit Shenandoah National Park in late Oct. Any suggestion on trails I could handle with enhanced traction tires. My wife is always concerned I might be able to get in but getting out might be another story or she is afraid of a malfunction, me less so. I find the i167 very reliable and it has managed to navigate any surface I have tried. My battery range is about 10 miles. Also any sites outside the park that I might glide.

Like others I have seen some beautiful sites from Portland to Portland that were inaccesable to me pre segway.

Is there any official ruling concerning the NP vs Segway
w/placard?

Thanks

Tom

Here's the website you might find useful:

and here is info on the accessible trail. http://www.nps.gov/shen/pphtml/accessibility.html

I was the first segway to tour Thomas Jefferson's home in Monticello last fall and it was just fine.

Is the i167 the "p" version with smaller tires and platform at 6 inches off the ground?

My Segway has 8 inch clearance and the original tires (2 1/2 yrs old).  I've had not problems using it in the woods, throughout the trails in Shenandoah Park or anywhere for that matter.  I will be doing some fall site seeing in the mountains again this year so I'm hoping my tires aren't too bald for the adventure

Hi Tom,

Well if you're asking what their "official" policy is, then officially you still can't use the Segway, even if you're disabled.

However, we have been working with the National Park Service since July 2004 and we do expect, and believe, that they will soon issue guidance bringing the service into compliance with section 504 of the 1973 rehabilitation act.  Now of course the term "soon" is relative, particularly when you're talking about a governmental agency.

But more importantly over the last six months all reports from people visiting the park's who have disabilities that are using Segways have been that none have experienced any difficulties.  So what I suspect is happening is that while they have not yet changed official policy, National Park Service Rangers are exhibiting some common sense.  I will be in Washington, DC next week and hope to have some conversations with some of the officials at the Park service.

By way if you're interested in some reading on the subject we wrote a paper on it which is under the tab DRAFT Articles & Letters:
